Caring for the earth is inextricably linked to Cipla’s core purpose of Caring For Life. After all, of the 6 essentials for good health – sunlight, clean air, water, food, sleep and exercise, four are nature itself.
Today, climate change poses a serious challenge to human survival as well as a business risk to our operations and physical assets. However, it also presents an opportunity for the pharmaceutical sector to rise responsibly to the health challenge by making drugs that are affordable and accessible. We are committed to doing our bit in solving the climate change crisis faced by the world today.
Our Approach

At Cipla, our approach to sustainability is closely integrated with our long-term ambition to build smarter solutions that are aligned with our purpose of ‘Caring for Life’.
Towards this, we actively pursue sustainable practices such as reducing resource use, increasing renewable power share, replacing traditional fuels with greener alternatives, paring down water usage, and playing a pivotal role in successfully implementing Extended Producer Responsibility. We have extended these initiatives beyond the factory gates and engaged with our stakeholders for greener, more sustainable operations.
FOCUS AREAS
Our initiatives are aligned with sustainability megatrends like climate change, circular economy and water stewardship. Based on extensive consultation and feedback from our internal and external stakeholders on material issues, we have identified key strategic focus areas to champion climate positivity.

ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Energy is central to our operations and a key lever in reducing our environmental footprint while driving operational excellence. We have a four-pronged energy management strategy:
- Improving energy efficiency through awareness, monitoring, and operational optimisation.
- Adopting advanced technologies that enhance energy performance and reduce emissions.
- Upgrading and replacing inefficient equipment and processes to optimise resource use and improve productivity.
- Expanding renewable energy adoption through solar, wind and other clean energy sources in the total energy consumption mix.
CARBON MANAGEMENT
We focus on reducing our carbon footprint through enhancing energy efficiency, investment in product innovation, transitioning to alternative fuels, and scaling up renewable energy across our operations. In December 2025, we achieved an 82% reduction in Scope 1 (energy-based) and Scope 2 emissions across India manufacturing operations against the FY 2019–20 baseline, while renewable electricity accounted for 84%. Building on this momentum, our ambition is to achieve a 30% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions across global operations by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2050.

WATER MANAGEMENT
Water is a critical resource for our operations, and we are committed to using it responsibly. In FY 2025–26, we maintained our water-positive status at 2.6 times across India manufacturing operations by focusing on four key priorities:
- Improving water efficiency through monitoring, optimisation and conservation measures.
- Enhancing water recycling and reuse through advanced treatment systems.
- Reducing freshwater dependence through rainwater harvesting and replenishment initiatives.
- Strengthening water resilience through community-based water conservation initiatives
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Cipla has consistently scaled up waste management practices by reducing generation quantities and directing waste to authorized Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities (TSDF). In FY 2025–26, approximately 98% of waste was recycled or reused, and all India manufacturing operations maintained Zero Waste to Landfill certification with 24 units advanced from Platinum to Platinum+ certification. We have reached this milestone by significantly increasing the recycling and co-processing of waste, thereby effectively minimizing the amount directed to landfills. All our hazardous and non-hazardous waste is inventoried periodically and disposed of in compliance with applicable government regulations.
